Step into the intricate world of post-production, where every spoken word is meticulously shaped into an auditory masterpiece. Flutter echoes, akin to elusive whispers, subtly influence the very essence of studio acoustics, impacting not just the technical aspects of audio post-production but also the emotive resonance conveyed through every spoken phrase. In this blog, we'll explore the physics behind these spectral reflections, examining their manifestation and understanding the profound implications they bear on spoken word mixing. We'll also delve into a real-world case study where a flutter echo was successfully mitigated by a SoundBuild design.
Our recent collaboration presented a unique opportunity to assist No.8 London, located in a beautifully converted barn in the heart of vibrant Soho, with a pressing acoustic concern in one of their esteemed mixing studios.

Upon receiving the inquiry from No.8 London in Soho, our seasoned acoustic engineering team swiftly initiated a comprehensive approach to tackle the acoustic challenge. Recognizing the critical role acoustics play in shaping the auditory experience, our first step was engaging in detailed discussions with the client, taking the time to understand the unique requirements of a monitoring engineer.
Following these discussions, SoundBuild orchestrated a listening test within the crucial mixing position. Employing a calculated approach, we introduced an impulse signal into the space, scrutinizing how the sonic waves interacted with the studio's surfaces.
The results of this rigorous evaluation were illuminating. It became immediately apparent that a flutter echo problem was prevalent within the mixing position. The sonic reflections, like ethereal whispers, disrupted the desired clarity and precision that No.8 London sought in their audio production. Armed with this newfound understanding, SoundBuild embarked on a collaborative journey with No.8 London, devising a tailored acoustic solution to ensure that the studio not only met but exceeded the highest standards of sonic excellence.

Flutter echoes arise when high-frequency sound repeatedly reflects between parallel surfaces, such as walls, ceilings, and floors. When these echoes occur near a mixing position, two issues emerge. Firstly, the stereo imaging becomes elusive, making it challenging to precisely locate the panning of individual tracks. Secondly, the comb filtering effect, characterized by closely spaced peaks and dips in the frequency spectrum, imparts a subtle phasey quality to the audio from your monitors. This phenomenon can be likened to the sound produced when speaking into a garden hose, though in this case, it is less pronounced.

A survey of the room and a sketch of the geometry to assist with the reflection path helped us identify the problem. Parallel to the listening position at the back of the room, there was a window facing the listening position directly, and the hard surfaces of the monitoring screen at the front of the room. The sound energy from the monitors was being fired directly at these hard surfaces, and the reflections were getting 'caught' in this plane, resulting in the flutter echo and undesirable acoustic effects for the mixing engineer.
Given that the studio was already constructed and had a busy schedule, it was necessary to conduct a strategic 'stealth' redesign of the studio layout. SoundBuild devised a design that altered the path of the reflection, preventing the sound waves from getting 'caught' in the plane that was causing the flutter echo.

We provided advice on the specific detailing of joinery and glazingto ensure that the integrity of the sound insulation was maintained. The solution was installed, and the flutter echo was eliminated, allowing the mixing engineer to make sonic decisions in a suitable environment.

Our collaboration with No.8 London exemplifies the effectiveness of understanding the intricacies of studio acoustics and employing targeted solutions. As we continue to navigate the complex landscape of post-production, SoundBuild remains committed to delivering bespoke acoustic designs that elevate the auditory experience, ensuring that every spoken word resonates with clarity and precision.
